Horse show season is upon us and you know what that means: time to start gathering all of your show gear, polishing those riding boots, and making sure your tack is in tip-top shape.
This is our first show season (more on that later) and not knowing how much prep work was involved, I left the final gathering of gear to a couple of days before my son’s first horse show. Only then did I discover that his black helmet – the only show quality one he had – was completely scuffed up. Local stores didn’t have a black one in his size, and there wasn’t enough time to order a new one from Amazon. Gah!
Luckily, we live in the age of the internet. And we had lighter fluid in the house.
An Easy Way to Remove Helmet Scuffs with Lighter Fluid
Turns out all you need is some cotton balls and lighter fluid to remove scuffs on your black (non-velvet) show helmet. I discovered this handy trick in the video below. The video creator was removing scuffs from a motorcycle helmet, but I figured a riding helmet was pretty similar so I gave it a go. It worked perfectly! I thought I’d share this trick here in case anyone else needs to fix a scuffed up equestrian helmet on short notice. 🙂

Do you leave the lighter fluid on it or wipe it off with something else?
I just wiped the helmet off with a cloth. 🙂
